270° vs 360° freestanding awnings: what distributors should stock

Three formats

  • Side awning — pulls out straight from a case on one side of the rack, supported by legs.
  • 270° awning — mounts at a rear corner and swings around the side and back, often freestanding with hinged arms.
  • 360° awning — covers the full perimeter of the vehicle.

Wind and guying

Freestanding does not mean windproof. Every awning should be pegged and guyed in wind. Make sure the awning ships with legs, guy ropes and pegs, and that the manual explains it.

Fabric choices

Canopies are usually 420D or 600D Oxford with PU coating, or 280 g poly-cotton canvas. Oxford is lighter and dries faster; poly-cotton is quieter and breathes better. Read our fabric guide for detail.

Building the range

  1. A straight side awning in two lengths for entry price points.
  2. A 270° freestanding awning in 2.0 m and 2.5 m radius, left and right hand.
  3. Matching annex walls and rooms.
  4. Optional LED strip and bracket kits.

Key takeaways

  • 270° is the volume seller.
  • Stock left- and right-hand versions for your market’s driving side.
  • Annex walls turn an awning sale into a system sale.

Frequently asked questions

Which side should a 270° awning mount on?

Usually the passenger side, away from traffic — left-hand in right-hand-drive markets such as Australia and the UK, right-hand in North America and Europe.

Can a 360° awning go on any vehicle?

It needs a rack strong enough for its weight and mounting points at the front and rear. Check rack design load first.

Are freestanding awnings windproof?

No awning is windproof. Peg and guy every awning in wind and close it in strong gusts.
